A series of biannual events

African Perspectives is a series of conferences on Urbanism and Architecture in Africa, initiated by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Kumasi, Ghana), University of Pretoria (South Africa), Ecole Supérieure d’Architecture de Casablanca (Morocco), Ecole Africaine des Métiers de l’Architecture et de l’Urbanisme (Lomé, Togo), ARDHI University (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania), Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) and ArchiAfrika during African Perspectives Delft on 8 December 2007.

The objectives of the African Perspectives conferences are:

• to bring together major stakeholders to map out a common agenda for African Architecture and create a forum for its sustainable development
• to provide the opportunity for African experts in Architecture to share locally developed knowledge and expertise with each other and the broader international community
• to establish a network of African experts on sustainable building and built environments for future cooperation on research and development initiatives on the continent

Second half 2011 – Casablanca, Morocco: African Perspectives 2011

The next African Perspectives conference will be held in Casablanca, Morocco in 2011 and organized by the Ecole Supérieure d’Architecture de Casablanca.

Not only will it elaborate upon themes discussed during former African Perspectives conferences, but it will also provide the opportunity for participants to have a closer look at Casablanca’s specific situation and get in touch with new architectural challenges and themes. With Morocco’s famous natural environment, important cultural heritage, diverse landscapes and charming cities, the  5^th African Perspectives conference will certainly become a great success.

September 2009 – Pretoria/Tshwane, South Africa: African Perspectives 2009 – The African City CENTRE: (re)sourced

In September 2009 ArchiAfrika, Pretoria Institute for Architecture (PIA) and the University of Pretoria organized AFRICAN PERSPECTIVES 2009, the 3rd international conference in the series, which focused on the unique and diverse character of the African City as resource, as well as resourcing the city.

‘The African City Centre (Re)sourced’ carries multiple meanings, which are translated into three themes:
* the African City Centre in a contemporary global context
* the (historical) identity of the African City Centre
* the future life of the African City Centre

December 2007 – Delft, The Netherlands: African Perspectives 2007 – Dialogues on Urbanism and Architecture

From 6 to 8 December 2007, ArchiAfrika organized the African Perspectives event together with the University of Technology in Delft, the Netherlands.

A marketplace where architects, urban planners and other professionals, academics and students from all over the world came together.

They identified a number of specific processes in Africa that have been considered from different perspectives: urban development, the built cultural heritage, building in Africa, the African Diaspora, and African architectures.

June 2007 - Kumasi, Ghana:  African Architecture Today

The conference African Architecture Today was held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana.

Speakers and participants from all over the continent, as well as from the United States and Europe, were present to try to define African architecture and the state it is in at present, to build relationships between those training for, studying and working on spatial and building projects in Africa and other global regions and to publish and disseminate current work in Africa.

July 2005 – Dar es Salaam, Tanzania:  Modern Architecture in East Africa around independence

In July 2005, a 3 day conference called “Modern Architecture in East Africa around Independence”, which was organized by the Dutch foundation ArchiAfrika, in cooperation with the Architects Association of Tanzania (AAT), University College of Lands and Architectural Studies (UCLAS) Dar es Salaam, University of Leuven, University of Technology Delft and University of Technology Eindhoven, was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The theme for the conference was chosen as a result of the question what had been preserved from the marvelous examples of modern architecture realized in Tanzania between 1950 and 1975.
